I've Witnessed The Witness

(A Review And A Reflection
of The Witness Musicale Play)

The Witness is a youth musicale play that was performed in Cathedral of Praise Manila here in the Philippines or better known as COP (COP is also the local church where God has put me in to grow more in my relationship with the Lord). The play was just finished this September 24 but was played from September 22-24 at the auditorium of every COP campus here in Manila.

It was a great musicale play. It was a story of Jesus being narrated by Peter who himself was a witness of Jesus' life.

This musical play was portrayed by the very talented young people of Cathedral of Praise.

I was moved to write this review and reflection to share the lessons to others who were not able to watch it and also share my take aways to those who were able to watch it. My review and reflection will all be positive not because it was from my local church but because it was really a great musical play.

The script:

It was done very creatively. I love the part when Mary was singing a lullaby to Jesus when he was still a baby. Wow! Very creative. How many of us would have imagined that Mary also experienced singing a lullaby to Jesus when he was still a baby? I think a few or no one. But in this play, the writer has a vast imagination with the Holy Spirit's inspiration. It made me realize when i watched that part that it was very possible because Jesus was 100% man and 100% God when he was here on earth and He himself experienced crying as a baby and needs a lullaby to put Him to sleep. That was so amazing!

Overall, the script was very well done. Very creative. Very powerful. Very biblical. Awesome!

Peter (The Witness)

Peter was the narrator in this play, telling the story of Jesus from His birth up to the resurrection and until they were baptized by the Holy Spirit. The narration was greatly combined with beautiful songs sang by the characters themselves and also with graceful dances or choreography in every scene, very organized narration and very well performed. Peter, as the witness is a great encouragement to us Christians to be a witness as what mentioned in Acts 1:8, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” -NLT). What a privilege to be a witness telling people about Jesus anywhere you go, telling that Jesus can do miracles, that Jesus loves us, that Jesus cares for us, that Jesus can raise up the dead, even the dead dreams and visions in our hearts and also to tell others that Jesus is alive that He is coming back again.

James, John and Their Mother

I also love these three characters. The portrayal of the mother of John and James was well performed. She was the mother who came to Jesus and asked favor from Jesus to let her two sons sit in places of honor next to Him,  one on His right and the other on His left but Jesus didn't grant their request but instead, Jesus called them together and said that whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave.

The song composed for this particular scene was awesome. And of course, the portrayals of James and John were also great. The scene when they listened to Jesus about servant-hood made me teary eyed. I like the lyrics of the song when Jesus taught the disciples about servant-hood. It says: "If you want to be the top, you must serve like slaves." Wow. that's the kind of leadership Jesus himself exemplified, leadership is not lording it over but leadership is servant-hood. In addition to James and John's roles, their repentance saying "Lord, make me like you, please make me more like you," was also very touching. If we will have that same prayer to be more like Him, God is pleased. We are not perfect. We have a lot of flaws, wrong attitudes that need to be changed and the Bible says that we are being changed from glory to glory...to be like Him. What an encouraging scene that Jesus doesn't condemn us for the wrong requests or actions we have done but he is teaching us straight to the point but gently that will make us realize that we are wrong, He is always right.

Jesus

Of course, my favorite character there is Jesus. In this play, Jesus' character was very well portrayed as we can read from the Bible. Jesus in that play is a joyful Jesus (which is true because the Bible says Jesus is a joyful Jesus not the kind of Jesus we can see in the movies that He doesn't smile and looks sad. Jesus is not a sad God but he is a joyful God. In Hebrews 1:8-9 NLT says,

But to the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.

You rule with a scepter of justice.

You love justice and hate evil.

Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you,

pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.

Jesus was anointed with the oil of joy. He is full of joy. In His presence is fullness of joy. Psalm 16:11English Standard Version (ESV) says:

           You make known to me the path of life;

           in your presence there is fullness of joy;

at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

And since He is a joyful God and not intimidating, even children wanted to be with Him. Wow! He is so amazing!

Not only Jesus is a joyful God but He is also a prayerful and powerful one.He didn't only teach about prayer but he exemplified being prayerful. He is also powerful, more powerful than death. He rose Lazarus from the dead, how much more can He resurrect the dead dreams we have and the visions we had in the past.

The Background View

What i also love in this play are the background views in every scene. The use of the large monitor in the auditorium with the pictures from Israel are awesome and of course the highlight of it all was, the portrayal of Jesus going up to Heaven surrounded by clouds with the promise that He is coming back again. It was very realistic and it gave tears of joy in the eyes of the audience. Having that promise that Jesus will come back again is our hope. Yes, Jesus will come again. It's an anticipation rather than having the fear of being left behind. Jesus is coming again for us but as we wait for Jesus' second coming, let's also be a witness and tell the world that Jesus saves, Jesus heals, Jesus loves us and He is coming back for us.

Conclusion

Overall, The Witness is GREAT! It was world-class. And it's not only life-changing but it is also an encouragement to every christian to be a witness for Jesus. I hope it will be played again soon.

Prayer of Salvation

If you haven't given your life to Jesus yet and never accepted Him as your personal Lord and Savior, pray this prayer with all your heart:

Lord Jesus, I come to you right now. I ask for your forgiveness.
Cleanse my heart. From now on, i accept you as my Lord and Savior.
Lead me to your presence. Write my name in the book of life.
From this day forward, help me to turn away from my sin and follow you and make me a witness, telling others about you.
This i pray in your name, Amen!

Learn to know more of God personally by reading His word everyday and come to him in prayer. You can talk to him like a friend. You can tell him everything that's going on in your life. Also look for a church where you will grow in your relationship with the Lord that teaches the Bible.

No Good Thing

Text: Psalm 16:2 I said to the Lord, "You are my Lord, apart from you, I have no good thing.

King David was a successful warrior...one of the greatest kings of Israel, highly honored and had great solid achievements, but, in all these successes, he was humble enough to acknowledge that apart from God, he had no good thing. I salute him for these words, 'I said to the Lord, 'you are my Lord, apart from you, I have no good thing.'" It's a reminder for each one of us that whatever accomplishments or successes we have, we should be humble enough to acknowledge that apart from God, we have no good thing.

There was a king named Nebuchadnezzar who once didn't acknowledge that God was the source of everything. He said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?” After he said that, he was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird (Daniel 4:33).  At the end of that time, he raised  his eyes toward heaven, and his sanity was restored. Then he praised the Most High;honored and glorified him who lives forever. At the same time that his sanity was restored, his honor and splendor were returned to him for the glory of  his kingdom. His advisers and nobles sought him out, and he was restored to his throne and became even greater than before. And he praised, exalted and glorified the King of heaven and he said about God, "because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble" (Daniel 4:34-36).

How constantly are you reminding yourself and telling God that apart from him, you have no good thing? Remember that all we have accomplished, God has done for us. Without God, we have no good thing. Apart from him, we are nothing.

A Tribute To My Father And Mother

my father and mother in their younger years

Today is my late father's birthday and it has been 4 years that he has passed away but i still miss him especially during father's day and his birthday.

As a tribute to him, i would like to say that i'm so thankful to God for him. He may not be a perfect father but i learned a lot from his fatherhood. He exemplified hardwork, determination to succeed, taught us to value education, value life and before he died, he exemplified forgiveness and trust in the Lord.

me and my father before he died (2009)

When he was still alive, he listened to me when my heart was broken. When i needed extra time to learn how to drive after graduating from a reputable driving school for ten days, he was my great teacher...far greater than my driving school teacher.

He has been a good provider, strict but reasonable and a good father. Thank God for my late father!

Aside from being thankful to God for my late father, i'm also thankful to God for giving us a good mother. One of a kind! Last mother's day, i failed to give her a tribute on mother's day on this blog site but i believe its not yet too late.

My mother (center)

For me, she was not just the mother of the year 1977 but she is a mother of all time. I am thankful for her sacrifices, her time, her generosity, her being a forgiving mother, loving, kind, godly....and so many good character traits she has as a mother and as a person. She may not be perfect but she is the best. She is a blessing! She is one of my best friends, my prayer partner and my confidante. I love you, mother! May you live longer and see all your present and future grand children!

Open Doors

Text: Isaiah 22:22

I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David, what he opens no one can shut and what he shuts no one can open.

Thoughts:

I believe in opportunities and seizing opportunities. I also believe that opportunities not grabbed are lost opportunities.

The bible is telling us that when God opens a door, no one can shut and what he shuts no one can open. If God has an open door for us and it’s really his will for us, that open door belongs to us and no one can shut it.

But although no one can shut that door for us, if we don’t enter or step into that door in the time-frame God has given us, when that door is shut by God, no one can open it.

Remember the ten virgins, they were given time to prepare for the coming of the bridegroom but five of them didn’t prepare ahead of time so when the bridegroom arrived, they were not there (they were still on their way to buy oil) and the door was shut for them. Although that parable is about the kingdom of God, we could relate that to an open door presented to us.  Those ten virgins were given time to prepare but the five foolish virgins didn’t prepare ahead of time, so when the opportunity for them to step into the open door to be with the bridegroom and join the wedding banquet, they weren’t there and the door was shut. The bridegroom didn’t even open the door for them even if they begged and shouted.

In my own life, I’ve lost open doors God has presented to me so this is a lesson I’ve learned. I hope you’ll heed it.

If you insist on stepping into that closed door, you might miss another open door for you in that  certain time of your life. I agree to what Alexander Graham Bell said, “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”

If you missed that open door God has presented to you, ask God for another open door and enter to it. Yes, what God opens, no one can shut and what he shuts no one can open and before God opens another one for you, prepare for it and then enter to it once it’s open. Don’t try to open a door that God has already shut for you. Just wait for another open door. God is the God of chances and he can open another door for you.

Prayer :

Lord, prepare me for the doors you are going to open for me. And when you open those doors, let me be ready to enter them and not miss them. Help me to be wise in every situation and do the things I need to do in preparation. Forgive me if I missed open doors you had for me. I ask for your grace and mercy to open a new door/ doors for me and grab every opportunity you are giving me. Thank you, Lord for your mercy and your grace and the great plans you have for my life.Let those great plans of yours be fulfilled in my life.
